Uh oh! First Long Crank this morning 1500 miles

08 335 - 1500 miles and it has been perfect so far, this morning got in and it crank for a couple seconds before starting, then was ok the next time I started it.

Is this it and it will get worse and need a fuel pump or is the odd long crank possible and normal?

At least these cars seem to give you a warning - my E46 came home one day and went in the garage - next morning it didn't start and needed a fuel pump (40k miles) - BMW must put fuel pumps out to bid like the government does - lowest bid or closest relative gets the contract no matter the quality!

My cousin dropped his off for the same reason. I told him to ask the SA to test the fuel pump. They said they couldnt repeat the problem, and for him to try using his other key!!

I am hoping it just happens occassionally, but I have never once had a long crank on any of my other vehicles, they always just start the same every time - think I am just paranoid because of reading every day in the forum that everyone is getting a new fuel pump! I was hoping the 08's would be all set, but there have already been several 08's that got new pumps!

There are some areas in the US that switch to reformulated gasoline at the beginning of summer. When the gas switches over, your car may have longer cranks at first. A long shot, but a possibility if this just started your first tank after Memorial Day.

Since I picked it up nearly three weeks ago, mine has taken three seconds or more to turn over when cold, every day. When warm it turns right over. Have to find some time to schedule an appointment and take her in.

In the cold it takes longer for any car to turn over. I even notice thia in my 330i.

My fuel pump concerns arose when the cranks surpassed a duration of five seconds.

So no, anything more than 1 crank would be cause for alarm.

So this week starting a couple days ago if the car sits for more than a couple hours it cranks for 5 or 6 seconds, guess it is time for the dealer - couldn't get an appointment til next week and they acted suprised that an 08 is having the issue (even though several people have posted with 08's getting new pumps, so looks like BMW has had 2 years to fix the problem and never has - very sad!). Even GM has direct injection with a high pressure fuel pump and they seem to make it work!

Guess I will know next week!

"First Long Crank this morning" - it's called morning wood... surprised you've never had that before.

My car did the same thing. Then I read on this forum about using top tier gas and I started using Shell V-power 93 octane exclusively. I havent had a long crank since. It fires right up every time. Its worth a try.

I am also having occasional difficulties on the crank with my 08 E93. I’ve been putting of dropping the vehicle with the dealership because I don’t want to part from my ride.

I wonder if it is gas + heat - it was 100 degrees here the last few days and I had long cranks (on Mobil 1 93 octane), this morning it was 70 and low humidity and it fired right up - I will fill up with some V-Power and see what happens next hot spell

I use Shell V-Power exclusively as well and I've already had my fuel pump replaced once when the car had 6500 miles on it. Now, after having the remanufactured fuel pump for about 3 weeks, I'm getting 3-4 seconds cranks before it fires up again. That's not too mention that after I picked up my car when they replaced the fuel pump initially the "service engine soon" light was on for like 4 days. So yea I don't think the type of gas, as long as it's higher than 91 Octane, matters at all. I don't really think 89 Octane would cause the fuel pump to fail either but, I'm not chancing that...

Thanks for educating me on thermodynamics but I think I know when mine is unusual. It is to the point of embarrassment if within earshot of anyone. Dropped it off today, will hear back tomorrow. Got a CEL too. No tune on my car, nor has there ever been. 1350 miles, 1 month since delivery

I don't know if letting it sit is the issue. I only drive mine about once or twice a week and sometimes once in two weeks. Even after sitting some time it turns right over, and this is both in the winter and up to now. If there are long cranks often I think something isn't working as it should. Mine is an 08 Sept build. 3.5k miles so far.

Same thing happened with my car just in the last week. Maybe it was the heatwave??? Agreed on the embarrassing part.

Uh oh! First Long Crank this morning 1500 miles

Mine started with the long cranking and occasional rough idle. I brought it to the dealer yesterday and they pulled some codes off the car and wanted to run some pressure tests on the fuel pump. Today, I found out that they are replacing the fuel pump. My car has almost 12000 miles on it. If you're concerned, just bring your car to the dealership and have them check it out.
