Help....I'm having this problem now too, at 52K

For the past few days, my steering wheel locks up when I try to start sometimes now along with a steering wheel light w/lock......I'm out of warranty, may I be able to ask for some kind of goodwill since I'm barely out of warranty??.....

Anyone plz feel free to chime in, I'm concerned about being stranded if this keeps happening.....

If no goodwill is provided from the dealer, does anyone know a BMW Indy Shop can perform this repair as well??

Thanks, Will

The car will store the faults and the mileage that they occurred so that might not work. BTW I had my steering column replaced at 49k for the same issue I didn't drive my car for a week so I didn't go over my warranty until I could get a appointment.

This is a known issue, and a safety issue. And it's absolutely a manufacturing defect and not related to wear and tear - you will need a new steering column. I would gather as much supporting data as you can online, then ask the dealer to get it fixed. If they refuse, then contact BMWNA.

There may be a service bulletin on this somewhere too.

u might want to check if u have warrenty still because when i had a nissan a couple of years ago at 72k (which was way over my 3 year 36k) i had some work done because they have 5 year 100k on certain items so just go check if its covered or not.

I dropped off my car this morning with my SA at my local BMW dealer. They are taking care of the repairs at no cost and provided me a Hyundai loaner.

Will fill you in as soon as I get my car back. So far, I've been really happy the way they're handling this.....especially with the goodwill help I got from BMW. I'm very satisfied so far with the wonderful service I got, especially given the car is out of warranty.

I wanted to thank all of you for helping out, you guys are great!

is the extended warranty the same as the CPO 100,000 miles/6year warranty?

Steering column replacement is no longer the solution to this steering wheel lock problem.

The current fix is a software update (Progman).

As told to me by my SA, 3 months ago.

Not necessarily... however, if you do buy it after the regular warranty runs out, be prepared to spend a TON more.

Consider an aftermarket warranty. They're less picky about mileage, just make sure you don't buy a BS one.

it depends on the fault..typically its a programming fix..though we have had a few that the programming didnt fix the problem and it needed a column..

+1 Mine was fixed with software flash and no issues since. However, it's only been about 2k ago and I still wonder if it will happen again. Others have said they had the flash fix only to have the malfunction happen again. Regardless, I bet since you are beyond the 50k they will try the software fix first but I feel certain they will cover this as it is a well known and common defect.

My SA said they will do a software update, but ended up replacing the steering column. It's a very common problem and my dealer seems eager to have it resolved.

I just got my car back today, they reprogrammed the car. Invoice shows: "found faults for steering lock. Performed test module and was prompted to check connections. Removed steering wheel airbag and steering column underpanel. Checked connections all ok at this time. Was prompted to perform programing of cas control module. Entered CIP programming. Encoded and programed complete vehicle."

Car is fine so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hope the car will be okay down the road.

e90will,

Thanks for the info. and update. I have a 06325i with 58K and just last night I had a yellow steering wheel fault and the car would not start.

I got out of the car, unlocked it again and the car started with no problem. I had an explanation mark on the next start, about 30 minutes later and the car started with no problem. Also, no problems or faults since then (so far). Was your fault yellow or red.

Thanks.

I had the same issue, and the dealer only had to update the software. Problem hasn't occurred since.

For those of you that had software updates that fixed your problem, when was the last time you had a software update?
