I believe that set-up is reserved for the DCT type of transmission

I'm pretty sure that's the shifter from the x5...I had one as a loaner a couple of weeks ago...yes, it looks cool/different. But, beyond the looks, its not really that cool (i.e. shifts like shit compared to my e90 step).

The 3 series will not get the e-shifter from the 5 series etc. IIRC the auto in the 328 (a GM sourced product) will not be compatible with the e-shifter so that would increase the variables per car and thus increase price per car.... not something BMW is interested in.
I will look further into this but my sources have not mentioned this at all. The next z4 will though to increase available space.

The e-shifter in the 5 series and x5 is a bit confusing. the regular shifter in the 3 is just fine.
parking brake - I'd rather see a mechanical one.

Like anything else, it takes some getting used to. I drove a loaner 528xi last week that had this -- to put it in Park, you press down the button on top. But since I was used to pushing the lever forward into Park on other cars, that's what I did on this. I only did it a couple of times because instead of Park it ends up in Reverse. What a strange feeling to take your foot off the brake and see ground moving...
The main difference was that the piece felt very light and cheap. I initially thought it was cool looking, but after driving it, prefer my step shifter on the 335i. |

If it didn't feel plasticky I'd love it. I think it looks very modern.

They react at the same speed. If they were inferior I doubt BMW would slot em in.

Can I ask what e60 you own? Could be a different ZF tranny. I don't see why BMW would swap out for an inferior design...

That shifter is in the 5 series. It looks cool, but its annoying. Doesn't fit in with the interior. Too damn big.. I had in a loaner car once. Seems to have an annoying lag when selecting a gear. Or maybe all the BMW autos are like that
