Carfection: The Ultimate BMW M3 Shoot, E30 to F80

With the recent end of production of the F80 M3, Carfection has taken initiative to get the five generations of BMW M3 together for a shoot.

In the latest episode of their series For the Love of Cars, or FtLoC, is a lengthly and detailed look at the behind the scenes setups and work involved for this particular shoot. Contained within is also some casual commentary and discussion about the M3 family through the years and generations.

In the video, the M3s can be seen being filmed driving on Castle Combe Circuit.
Among the M3s gathered for the shoot are the top-tier models that have borne the M3 badge across five generations beginning with the E30 M3 Sport Evolution, the E36 M3 GT, the E46 M3 CSL, the E92 M3 GTS, and the F80 M3 CS.

It's a safe bet to expect that a series of BMW M3 films or a film involving a drive/review of all 5 generations of the M3 will be made available from Carfection in the near future, which is something to look forward to if this expectation holds true.

They're not using the top tier model of every generation : the F8x should be fielding a GTS. Yes, clearly the GTS is an "M4", but of course that bifurcation was made by BMW for purely BS reasons

All the other M3's fielded are coupes. The F8x is being handicapped for artificial reasons. That said, the CS will still wipe the floor with all the others, although I would still take the e46 CSL for non-ultimate performance reasons

The M2C should be in there also but is being handicapped by numerical reasons as well. It's more M3-esque, historically, than the F80 is.

A 2 isn't an M3 most likely is why.

Even a 4 isn't a 3.

It shouldn't matter what modern BMW most closely emulates M3's of old, it's about what currently wears the badge. Otherwise you're not comparing M3's. They got it right.

This whole thread is a cyclical round of clickbait. I guess it's a good way for BMW to get a retrospective about the preferred attributes from the older generations, but modern brute force will generate better numbers. The rest is subjective feel.

This preview is garbage and I agree the M4 GTS should've been used but I have high hopes for the real video I love these cars real enthusiast.

Is the M4 GTS wearing an M3 badge? No it is not. It is wearing an M4 GTS badge. That was BMW Marketing’s doing. So, Carfection got it right. You don’t put the M4 in when comparing the all of the M3s. Now, since the OG M3 was a coupe, chances are they used all coupes, but it was the F8X gen where they split the coupe and sedan into M4 and M3. Awkward, yeah. So, I could see an argument to use the E30 M3 coupe and E46 Coupe, as the M3 for those generations came only in coupe form (I forgot the reason why they killed the idea of an e46 M3 sedan) and then use sedans for the other generations. Which then starts making it more convoluted, because the e36 HiPo variants came in coupe form, as did the e9X, even though they did make a e90 CRT, which didn’t have the rear wing and stripped out interior. And let’s not forget the e46 M3 GTR Strassen Version with the V8, only like 6 were made. So, not really a production model.

So, now you see what happens when we start making exceptions for the M4 GTS which we all know is an M3 coupe GTS in a logically correct world devoid of greedy marketing entities?

Really disappointing. Two guys sitting in the back of a Civic talking about M3s for 20 minutes? Barely any footage. Why do they need to have this video as a precursor to the actual video referenced in the title? Are they unironically comparing the new Civic to a M3?
