Trade new e92 335 for used e46 M3?
Ill try to keep this short.
I see 335's everywhere I go, getting kind of tired of it, thinking about switching the 07 e92 335 that I ordered brand new back in 06 for a used 05 or 06 e46 M3 ZCP (or an M coupe). Whatever I traded for would have less miles than my current 335 and be in pristine condition. All opinions of the cars aside, is this a wise choice? What are the differences between new car warranty and CPO warranty? Would I get free maintenance with the used M car? List any potential downside you can think of. Also, what would be the best way to go about this...sell private party? sell to carmax? dealer trade? just see who will give me the most? How about the buying aspect...buy private party? Buy from a BMW dealer? Buy from a used car dealer? (Ive never bought used before so this is new territory) pix for clicks Last edited by meshguy; 07-26-2008 at 09:52 AM.. |

Was in your position - E92 335i or E46 M3....and to be honest, the 335i was the better choice FOR ME.
My reasoning is this: E92: - Latest Chassis - Factory Warranty - Better Fuel Economy - Less Wear on the Engine (it's not used like an E46) It was basically a no brainer if you use your head and not your heart. That said however - the E46 is a classic design. I saw a new M3 and it was just ugly when you compare it against the lines of the E46. The E46 has advantages: - Classic design. - Sharper handling. - It's an M - it'll always hold something over the E92. The real problem I had with the E46 is that in order for it to be a more enjoyable drive than the 335 is that you have to drive it - HARD. Higher revs, sharper turns - unless you drive a race track on your way to work, the E92 is just more fun to drive in everyday situations. That said - I'm sure the prior owner realized this too - hence expect a car that's been driven hard. I'd only consider going back to an E46 if that's exactly what you love, the aggressive look - then your head really doesn't make this decision. Best of luck. |

LOL and the 335i is problem free? Personally i would do it if it'll save money, don't do it if you have to fork out more... And get an M3, ///M coupe look like a penis so im not too fond of the styling

If you're only doing it because you want to "stand out" then I think you will be in for a rude awakening. While the M3 is not really a dime a dozen like the non-M models are, you will soon recognize and see more M3s on the road and then it's back to square one. People will usually only notice cars that are similar to their own.

M3s are plenty common in my area, but I saw 5 335's on my 19 minute drive to work yesterday. Theyre everywhere. M coupes are very rare, though. And trust me, I notice every interesting car on the road, so I wouldnt recognize more M cars if I were to own one. |

M coupe
even though that thing doesn't have much power compared to the new M3 it's still amazing to drive. Also it looks better than any 3 series |

Short and sweet, even if you're wealthy and don't care about 15k depreciation, learn to like what you have. Switching around costs much more over the long run. If you're bored with a lousy 335, why not buy another car for 15k? Even when you get bored with that, it would only cost maybe 4k in depreciation 3 mos. later. Keep doing this until you don't want to switch anymore, or at least mimize the amount it costs to switch.

+1 I`ve also owned an E46 M3, after going "backwards" from an E90 330d saloon, and now own another E92 330d again. Okay, different countries, different ways of driving etc, but to echo what the above poster says, the E9x technology is just newer, and therefore more up to date, and various things that I`d been able to set on the E90 (such as the door-lock delay), were unavailable on the E46, and were factory-set only, which annoyed me. Again, I also feel that the E46, although somewhat of a "legend" in its time, is now past that time, and is definitely looking dated. By all means go for an E9x M3, but not an E46 M3, great as it was. Just my tuppeny`s worth ! |
