Service Light - State Inspection?

I'm brain-dead right now from the stress at work, so please bare with me on this question.

My service light with the little car icon has come on. It no longer shows milegage and simply indicates 1/2009.

Is this due to the fact my state inspection is due this month? Or could there be other reasons? I plan on getting it taken care of this weekend. Will that reset this light, or will I still need to call to set up a appointment?

Thanks.

Which service light? The one I just attached? If that's the case, then the dealer will perform whatever service is required and everything will be reset accordingly.

Um, your car doesn't know what state you live in

What methodtim says is the winning answer.

It's red now, since it says 1/2009. However, last month it showed up and it still counted down the mileage as usual.

Still making an appointment regardless. Thanks.

Last month was 1/2009. It was still counting down mileage because you weren't overdue yet. This month, you're overdue, so it's red. Yes, make an appointment. It'll all be better afterward, I promise.

Yes, your car does know when your state inspection is due. The dealer programmed it in there. I had the same thing happen and took it to the dealer and they said its for the state inspection. At some point, when you first bought the car or when you had your first inspection, the dealer programmed it in.

Ah, those crazy dealers. What else have they programmed in there? How do you know if it's service or a federal, er, state inspection. It would drive me knuts. What is a state inspection anyway?

Ah, learn something new every day. Now, does OP go the dealer to get it inspected or the DMV? If he goes to the DMV, would they know how to reset it (doubtful...)?

Is the dealer not certified to perform a state inspection?
Anyway, probably annoying in most states as you can see the month of expiry for the inspection on the windshield.

The dealer can do it, or there are hundreds if not thousands of other places scattered across the states that require it.

Interesting. My sis's 07 530xi just went in for an emissions test and the car didn't say anything. We got a letter from the MVA.
