BOHICA: Washington State Income Tax proposal!!

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summ...6250&year=2009

Ah, some of the usual suspects involved in this farce. I sure hope the Washington State voters don't fall for this crap come November.

Oh, and I find it rather typical that the "bill digest" says it would only affect those making more than $200,000, but when you read the actual words in the bill, it says that even those making under $49,000 will pay 2.2%.....

From the digest:
Quote:
The tax is imposed on an individual's income that is over $200,000. For a head of a
household, income over $300,000 is taxed. For a married couple, the tax applies to income
over $400,000.
Oh, and the "concession" made by the state for taking money from your income? A 1.0% reduction in the sales tax rate. Ooooooooo!!!!!!! A minimum of 2.2% on all income in the state, and the state gives back a measly 1.0% in sales tax. However, once they get their constitutional amendment, then there is nothing to prevent them jacking both the sales tax back up, nor lowering the thresholds for applying future income taxes. They've already shown their hand by killing I-960.....

Soon enough we'd be just like California, paying 9.25% sales tax and 10% income tax. And look how well that has worked out for them.....

I think one report I read I've said that net-net, the state collects more tax revenue each and every year, beginning in 2011.

And finally, I really LOVE this comment from Lisa Brown (D-Spokane):
Quote:
A tax on high earners would "bring more fairness and stability to our sales-tax-dependent tax structure," Brown said on her blog Thursday.
Uh yeah, the current system isn't "fair". Yeah, the rich in this state don't buy very expensive items like BMW 760Li's that cost over $100k, meaning they pay over $10,000 in sales tax every couple of years! The rich surely aren't "paying their fair share" as some liberals believe.

Let's see, they pay the most in sales tax and B&O taxes (business owners) and barely use any of the government services. So I say they are right, the rich aren't paying "their fair share", they are paying SIGNFICANTLY MORE THAN THEIR FAIR SHARE!!!!

Oh, and I'm not rich, so I wouldn't even be affected by any sort of "screw the rich" income tax plan for those making over $200,000. It still pisses me off.

One of the selling point for coming to WA State for residency is that there is no income tax though sales tax is higher, and the pay is lower than other comparable programs in the nation. If they were to start taxing our income (80 hours a week at 8 bucks an hour), I'm leaving my program and moving back to Boston. At least their sales tax is only 5% and I get paid 10K+ more as a resident......

Which is exactly what would happen, especially if they did go with an income tax "only for the rich": An exodus of talent and entrepreneurs!

If we look at where Washington ranks in terms of "Tax Freedom Day" according to http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxfreedomday/, Washington already ranks #6 (tie) in taking the longest to shed the burden of taxes.

1 Connecticut, Apr 30
2 New Jersey, Apr 29
3 New York, Apr 25
4 California, Apr 20
5 Maryland, Apr 19
6 Virginia, Apr 16
tie Massachusetts, Apr 16
tie Washington, Apr 16
7 Minnesota, Apr 15
8 Rhode Island, Apr 14

So already we are just behind California for total tax burden. There are some lists we don't want to be #1 on!!
