No need to warm up your car?

When I bought my car they told me that there is no need to "Warm it up" in the morning before driving it... Im a little skeptical. What are your opinions?

no need at all! Start the car and drive away. Having the car run idle for minutes doesn't bring anything. Just drive gentle until the oil temps are up.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I think you should warm it up before driving just to get the fluids flowing. I'm not sure what kind of winter you have but it gets down to -40 C where I am. Personally I don't want to jump in my car when it's freezing cold out.

I let the rpm come down to less than 1000rpm and then go. I am smooth on it until temperature gets >140deg F according to my Scangauge.

+1 to that! It does not get -40C too often here, but it was -30C several nights. I think they tell you that you can just "drive away" because of emissions (BMW saving their butts, I am thinking they can not tell people that it is ok to just idle your car for no reason) and catalytic converters, I have heard that the cats can get clogged quicker if you let a vehicle warm up. I have lived in MN for 27 years and I almost ALWAYS let my car warm up for a few mins before taking off, and I have YET to have a problem.

I know you aren't supposed to for extended periods of time (I guess if you live somewhere where its -40 C then you'd think differently lol), because I know that it can cause premature wear of oxygen sensors.

If you want to make sure everything is circulated, give it maybe 30 seconds. Other than that, just take it super-easy until the temp gauge starts to move (like 2000 rpm and light throttle settings), drive normal after that, and don't drive it hard until the oil is up to 180 or so.

Oh wait...you're in a 328. No temp gauge. Take it super easy for 10 minutes in the winter, 3 or 4 in the summer (from a cold start). Don't drive it really hard for 10-15 minutes in the summer, and 20-25 in the winter.

the problem is that when idling it takes ages for the car to warm up. And even when the water temps go up, oil takes much longer. The oil in the gearbox and differential will not warm up at all. Better is to start driving with care and let the car warm up all together.

I just start it, let the idle smooth out a bit and then drive. I baby it until the temp gauge begins to move to the right. Unfortunately, my first 5 miles are heading down the mountain, so I miss the fun of the twisty's on the way down.

the manual says to start and drive slow/normal until the oil temp raises before smashing it... no need to warm it up..

+1. Especially in NJ.

And since your 328ix has neither oil nor water temp gauge, you can figure about 5~10 minutes of easy driving in moderate temperatures (ca. 45oF).

To be certain your car has warmed up, check the oil level while driving (see your manual) and if you do not get a reading, then continue to take it easy until you do.

He's got an E92, which means he has the oil temp gauge, the E90s only come with the MPG pin

people say just wait 40 seconds till the oil lubes the head and drive off

i dont agree with this at all.

you have to remember then metals change due to heat, they expand, so for you to drive off before the metals have properly set does not so good to me

Welcome to 1988.

No need to warm up, just go easy with the silly pedal until it warms up.
