Vibration at highway speeds
I just got my new 335xi coupe and first thing I did was upgrade to new wheels and tires. It came with 17" 339s I believe and I bought the 19" staggered 313 reps from **********s (Eurosport 5371's) and some Hancook v12s.
Had them put on yesterday afternoon and I didn't use the highway to much, but when I did it was fine. Fast forward to yesterday evening and there was a good amount of vibration between 60-80mph. Went back to the shop who rebalanced them, same issue. Went to another shop, they balanced them using a road force machine and said they were off. After new balancing went for a drive, same problem. Any ideas? I haven't hit pot holes or any big bumps, and the shop said they didn't appear to be bent. |

There's only so much money I want to throw away testing things, so far I've wasted the weekend and $250 between the balancing costs of two different shops. |

I had this issue, one V12 was defective. I was doing balancing at dealer because I don't trust other shops, they pinpointed which tire is defective and replaced it. Local tire shop paid for all labor because they simply were not able to balance these

thats what he did.......
but i would still advise to use dealership vs some chain tire shop. my understanding is that all balancing machines must be calibrated well in order to give perfect balancing. you also need to note to dealer that you have tried to balance the tires number of times without success |

Well I had them re-balanced again at a third shop, who said they were not balanced and needed weights. Still had the same issue on the highway though. The only other thing they noted was the hubcentric rings were a thin plastic and may be the issue. I called **********s and am having them overnight me some aluminum ones which I'll have put on tomorrow. If that doesn't work then it HAS to be the tires, even though the third shop I went to today said they discovered no "hops" while balancing the wheels/tires, which typically happens with bad tires.
I should know tomorrow... hopefully. |

Since you already had them roadforce balanced, I don't think the tires are balanced incorrectly. However, vibration at those speeds is normally a balancing issue. The 'plastic' rings you found inside your boxes are most likely hub centric rings. You'll need to pop them into the back of your wheel to prevent any vibration issues you're having. If you think the wheel is bent, try doing a 'run-out' on the wheel. There's a sensor they can put onto the wheel and rotate it to check for any irregularities in the roundness of the rim.

I'm having the same issue. I posted but got no response. When I got a road force balance done the guy showed me my wheels were a little off-perfect. But I'm only getting vibration from 60-80 like OP says.
Keep us updated please OP...I'd like to know if you ever get this solved. I'm going crazy with mine...

Its relatively normal to get a defective tire, not to mention that Hankook is a budget brand. |

I've never had Hancook's before, and I only bought them because a lot of members on this board have pretty good reviews for them. I usually buy higher end name brand tires otherwise. |

PS. dont know if this can be done with BMW, but Honda only charged me $80 bucks and then another $20 to mount and balance defective tire. Last edited by Kolyan2k; 06-26-2012 at 02:59 PM.. |

lol....yeah...I'll bring some good scotch...
I don't think the dealer will fix my problem.....but we'll see eventually. One thing I've noticed...it's worse when it's hot outside. If the weather is nice...it's much less. So I think I'm gonna wait out the heat first. I'm gonna get new rotors/try another set of spacers/maybe a new set of wheels...

Well I recieved the hubcentric rings that Alan @ **********s sent me, brought them into my wheel shop to get those installed and have the wheels/tires balanced for the 5th time and guess what? 3 out of 4 rims I recieved are bent. I wouldn't have known if the tech doing the balancing wasn't so particular, especially considering he's the only one to have caught this. He pulled me into the garage and showed me by putting them on the force balance machine, closing the cover so the wheel begins to spin, then opening the cover and while theyre still spinning you can see a wobble.
I put in a call to **********s, Alan was busy so I spoke to some other salesperson who said he'd call their Miami supplier where the rims came from and see what they say. It's been almost a week since I've been dealing with this mess and I hope **********s comes through with their customer service. |
