Jerking and accelerator delay help
I recent (3 months ago)bought a used e90 335i sedan here in BC, Canada.
The car is a USA car imported to Canada in late 2010. Idrive, sport and premium package. Hot climate car, no heated seats. 62k miles on it. I have 3 problems. 1. After pressing Gas Pedal, there is a delay of 1 sec before car takes off. Can this be fixed? 2. Going steady on uphills, or sometimes streight ways, approx 30 to 50mph. Steady in gas pedal. Cars lightly and quickly jerks multiple times. Gives, goes, gives, goes. After engine oil temp is at 200. Less noticeable. Dealer thinks it may be intake carbon built up. History. 2 coils replaced 2 spark plugs replaced at 34k. 2 hpfp replaced, latest with part #: 13517594943 at 35k also. Anyone have similar issues, and can tell me the cause, please. No engine check light. No errors pulled using DIS, which I do have. USB, vm -DIS. No long crank, perfect start every time. Rpm at idle seems low, like 600. 3rd issue: After starting car, waiting 1.5 min, I hear a ticking for about 8 to 10 min, then it stops, then another 5-8 min later it starts again. Is this normal for the n54? Dealer SA advised it is buildup from charcoal canister be fed back to engine.....hmmmm. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. DN. |

Dealer could be right. The jerking sounds like it could be misfiring. If the coils/plugs/injectors are ruled out, it is most likely carbon-fouled intake valves.
Easy (sort of) way to check is to borescope the backside of the valves. Dealership should be able to do this. Heck, and probably email you the pictures if you want.

For the ticking, I'd check out this thread. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13504
I had the same issue with the jerking too, seems like a lot of people have reported it over many different models. No SES or operational failures. I was under CPO and dealer tried multiple different things like replacing all coils, I replaced the spark plugs, resetting the transmission, etc etc. They finally opened a PUMA case with BMW and gave the car a brand new transmission... Go figure. That mainly solved the issue. Sometimes it still seems a bit jerky, but I think that's just how some of these cars are. If you're not under warranty, I wouldn't say you need a new transmission though. Maybe try getting the transmission adaptations reset and see if that helps you. Even my new one sometimes seems to adapt funny to where it will shift at odd points and not feel too smooth. Pretty rare though. |

For the record, I still have to do this myself (intake valve cleaning). A bit over 60k miles on the ODO. Seems to hit many 335i's around the 60k mark.

I agree with everyone on the intake valve cleaning. I did it myself several months ago, and it partially solved a different stuttering problem I had (ultimate problem was a physically broken fuel injector, but for some reason cleaning the intakes actually helped significantly...weird).
Also, as for the ticking, that is normal on the N54, at least every one I've ever heard. It's the fuel injectors. Take the engine cover off and it will get MUCH louder. I went for a drive with the cover off after replacing my injectors, and I could actually hear when the car cut fuel (for engine braking) because I could hear the injectors stop ticking. Just a by-product of the Direct Injection. |

All plugs should have been changed at 45k under maintenance plan. You have 4 with 60k+...I would start there.

Badsector, please let me know how it goes. after the walnut blast.
would love to hear your thoughts. I just had a Miss-fire code come up during my lunch today. car sat for approx 5 hours. went to start it, and it was a bad idle, and after about 1 min, I got a "Service Engine Soon" Light.....NOT Engine check or half engine check. I carry my laptop and my KDCan cable all the time with me, after work, read the codes, and sure enough had a: 29CE DME Combustion Misfire Cylinder 2 - Damaging exhaust gas start sequence - fault curently not present. - power management B1214 NG6WM - Energy diagnosis B6131_89112 ever had this on yours? Got the walnut blasting done.
Changed both vanos Solenoids. Changed all 6 spark plugs. Got an oil change. Intake and cabin filter changed. Not solved my problem. Then. Changed all six coils. So far, day 2, haven't seen the issue. Car is damn solid. DN |

Yes, the tranny adaptation was reset at the same time the walnut blasting was done by the dealer.
I didn't notice it for about 1.5 days, then it came back. After my usually drive today, there is hill that it does it on, every time, now let's see if it does it today. DN |

But I heard installation is like stuffing it in there. They have an installation guide on their site. Just curious, how many miles do you put on in 1 year approx. Walnut blasting should be approx every 45-50k miles. DN |

Also I have another thread on this issue which I updated. So I had 3 issues, but I decided to fix 4 things in this order. 1) walnut blast the intake ports. Only for 335i cars, no others. This help gain my power to what it should be....wow what a difference. 2) changed spark plugs and Vanos Solenoids. This did not do anything. 3) then I changed my Coils. All of them. Bang, problem has not reappeared for the last 8000km. Brandonroy, it feels like tranny shifting, but in actuality it is a miss-fire that the is not throwing a code. I replaced the Vanos, cause I went into Limp mode only once in like 4 months. The code was for the Vanos intake, but after the walnut blasting. But I am sure now it was never the Vanos, just the sparks and Coils. Regards, DN |
