E90 lci inner tail light on trunk are led or bulbs?
Hi Guys,
I got a E90 lci, i noticed today that my left inner tail light is not coming on, i m not even getting any error in the dash or idrive, i m talking of the tail light that is on the trunk near the license plate. I tried opening the trunk & shutting it, then it came on for a while & again switch off. I think they are leds, are they easy to replace? Thanks. Last edited by insane79; 01-19-2013 at 05:52 PM.. |

The inner lamps are LED and a complete assembly. I had a failure in one 2weeks after buying my car, dealer had to replace the entire thing.

Not to HiJack your thread but the same thing just happened to my 2011 e90.
How do you get the trunk liner off to get to the assy. Mine always comes back on when I tap the housing or re-shut the trunk. |

There is a couple of screws inside the trunk lid that holds the liner on. Stupid easy to remove. It'll hang on that safety trunk pull, and you can just pop the light assembly out.

update on the issue, i tried opening the trunk & shutting it when the car lights were on & then the inner left tail light came to life, i got super excited but when i parked the car back home the same issue it was off, could be a loose connection? i m get no error on dash, i also checked the idrive "check control" & no error
Thanks.. |

I have the same exact issue. Just noticed it today, light comes on briefly while closing the trunk and shuts off again. I tried removing those buttons, but after about 5 minutes I found this thread. So if I remove those 2 black screws would the lining come off and there would be access to the taillight connector?

They should be LEDs. Also, it's a pain to get that trunk liner off. The plastic plugs came out easy enough but those two plugs in the middle are trouble.

Odd, I took the trunk liner out... and unplugged the thing-- back in.. seemed to be good.. but still if you jiggle the wires etc.. it goes off and on.. does anyone have any ideas.. under warranty.. just ugghh it's 100 miles one way =)
Should I be removing something else? no moisture.. looks brand new car has 10k miles on it.. 3 yrs old. =) |

If it's LCI 90* model and rear light then it is definitely LED's feeding the two fibre type optic strips inside the light unit, the bulbs are rear FOG bulb (if fitted) and reversing light bulb. (UK and from what I know also US)
Could just be a loose connection, damp etc on or around the connector, remove the bulb holder which also has connections to feed the LEDS and clean up the contacts. The other possible problem (older cars) from what I have seen is broken wires inside the rubber gaiter between the trunk and car body where the wiring harness feeds through. It pulls off each end quite easily to inspect, just make certain it goes back on properly. If it is the actual LED's (very unlikely) then you need to get the lamp apart to fix it, I have done it for the outer cluster but not the inner and it's tricky... or buy a complete new light unit. well the same issue i noticed today with the right inner led lights. Will take it to the dealer next week hope its a loose contact or something like the left one was, the left inner one is perfect but the right inner one doesn't turn on
