Thumbs down This dealer asking $4k over sticker their launch car

I found a dealer with an M4 showing in their inventory. I contacted them and they said it was available.

" I understand you are interested in the 2015 BMW M4 that we have listed. This vehicle is supposed to be our "launch car" as it will be the first one to land. If you are intersted in purchasing it, you may buy this car for $82,300.00. It is absolutely loaded! Please let me know if you are intersted in proceeding. We can secure the vehicle so that when it arrives it is yours. It is scheduled to arrive with in the next 10 days. I look forward to hearing from you." After going back and forth on options and down payments and shipping they tell me that the car is marked up $4000.

What a waist of time.

And this surprises you why?

I remember the E9X M3 had some crazy markups for a while.

about 3 months ago, when the first M235i and 435i convertible arrived here in OC, I saw 10K markup on them! it's normal.

No surprise. If you want the newest shiny piece of kit on the block it's going to cost you. If you must, must, have it today their are plenty of dealers willing to negotiate slightly off msrp vs marking up and hoping someone comes in who's desperate for the car. Although I'm guessing most of the available cars in the US are otherwise promised at least for a bit.

All the people who put money for the allocations of M3/4 are paying MSRP unless they are doing ED like myself. My dealer has sold all the allocations till January of 2015. Anyone who wants one can either put a deposit for later 2015 or buy the two launch cars with a 10K mark up due to the high demand. I am not surprised at all since if you think about this new M3/4 this are very limited production cars. Not like the 1M limited but each dealer will sell one or two M cars for every 100-300 non M cars. My dealer is getting a estimated 12 allocations for the remaining of the year, and they are all spoken for.

Does not surprise me but it should have been brought to my attention up front and not hidden till I was ready to pull the trigger. I am just going to wait for mine to get here in August at my $500 discount.

UPDATE: I told her thanks but no thanks and just got this:

I understand. The absolute best I could do is Sticker plus shipping. If that helps.

This is why, love it or hate it, the Tesla model of one price for all customers may be ideal. No dealer mark-ups. The consumer knows the price he's getting is fair price. Less time wasted negotiating and wondering if you could have gotten a better deal at the next dealership 50 miles away.

Supply and Demand. The MSRP is suggested price.

Some dealers will try whatever they can to capitalize on the limited supply and people that are willing to pay extra to have the latest and greatest. In areas where it's the only one, they'll probably find someone to pay for it. Pretty sure this happens with even American cars in short supply, the G500 seems to always have a handful of dealers charging well over MSRP for cars on the lot every year, Vette dealers did the same, as did ZL1s, etc.

I think it's ridiculous for a car that isn't actually 'rare' but who am I to say what someone else should pay? Dealers do this because they know they're likely to find at least someone who wants it. That and they dont mind having a new M4 sitting in their showroom for customers to see so bumping the price will either keep it around awhile or they'll make some nice cash if someone wants to sell it.

Given the fact that allocations went so quickly, that car wouldn't last 2 days if it was MSRP. Side note, 'fully loaded' should put the car well over $80k, so I'm guessing it wasnt actually fully loaded, I bet they didnt check the Carbon Ceramic brake option at least.

If I could wait for mine I would and not give in into any mark up or over paying for the car. This seems like a lot better offer as most dealerships will ask for MSRP as the bottom line. Maybe three years from now when the new LCI comes out we all might be able to get better deals.

How was it not brought to your attention? You inquired about the car and they said right away it has a $4k markup?

Unless you're leaving something out of your OP

Sounds like MSRP now. I bet it wont last long at that price.

Not going to do much better than MSRP for awhile (maybe some will get <$2k off without special pricing like military or ED but I expect most to go near MSRP for the time being)

Perfect opportunity for price gauging. They are not allowed to let it go until June 21st and there are pretty much no other way to get a car this summer if you haven't ordered one already. I'm surprised they opened with "only" $4k above sticker with the over 3 weeks they can't let it out the door.

There are better deals around than that already. Well, not for the launch cars I guess, but for the make to own ones. ED + additional discount is not even very rare as far as I recall.

When it comes to new cars like this. something you can get a normal deal, some times you get mark ups.

Now it's a good deal for anybody wants this car; however they will play with other factors like Money Factor or residual value. if you ask her to get you quote, you will see what I am talking about

It is the internet so we're most likely to hear the extremes. When it comes to pricing no one will 'brag' about paying MSRP so we're likely to hear about those that got pretty good deals or instances where people see mark ups (but wouldn't pay that).

My point was that sure, there will be decent deals for people that worked in to get the initial allocations and ordered their cars months ago, nothing great but still good considering it's a new model.

But a car that isn't spoken for and will be the first on the lot? Good luck. They have little reason to sell it below MSRP when it'll be impossible for someone to walk to a random dealership and find a M4 unspoken for.

Give it another 6 months after they start hitting the lots then deals will be made easier. Right now it's a sellers market.

Does everyone lease these cars!? I'm starting to question my sanity for always buying and forcing myself to keep it at least 4 years (2 years left on my 335 before I can allow myself to buy a M3...)

The 10 day is interesting as I was just told the same timeline by another dealer in York, PA for a Launch Car. If my buddy loses interest due to wait this car may available and since you live in MD, a very easy pickup short drive to complete deal. Please let me know and inbox me your contact info. The car is nearly loaded M3 Black Sapphire. You can follow progress on the thread here: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=990728
