An "In-Depth" Open Look at the S55 Engine Teardown ...

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Since everyone is going to ask, I had some valve train work done on the car. So I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the engine valve train opened up. Excuse my poor photography skills. Hopefully, it's interesting for you too. Enjoy.

Very cool sight that not many have seen yet.

Also curious as to what was done?

two of the lifters were 1.1mm too short, hence caused excessive ticking sound when running. All the lifers were replaced. Weird...

He secretly works for Quattro GMBH and wanted to see the details of the S55.

So this was done at BMW, under warranty? Just asking because the dealers rarely let anyone take pics of what they are doing to the engine.

Any close up of the injectors? I'm surprised to see that much coking on the injector tips at such a young age. How did the back of the valves look, carbon build-up?

Definitely repaired under warranty.

No other pics except for those taken. Not sure if I agree about the coking comment. When examining in person, all parts were squeaky clean, except for engine oil of course.

On the N54 engine this ticking (which disappears soon after the engine is warmed up) is normal, according to BMW. I actually like it, it gives some character to the engine I think it is present when a certain valve lifting map is selected by the ECU, sometimes not only at idle.

Sounds like my N55 cold. Once the exhaust flap opens after a minute or two it gets a bit louder until the oil is warmed up. Never makes the sound hot though...

Sucks for having lifter issues on a brand new car.
