M3 and M4 at the Vancouver Auto Show 2014

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I was there today when the show just opened. Both M3 and M4 were locked, but no other cars were locked except the i8 was behind glass. I asked a salesman on duty there if I could see the under the hood, he went to the counter to ask for the key, but came back that he is not allowed to open them, and suggested I should go ask the "boss" behind the counter.

I asked the boss man if I could see under the hood, but the guy replied rudely that they are locked. Duh! He then said they don't have the keys. I said really?! He went on to say they were locked for press and media during the press event. He just blew me off. I guess to him I didn't look like I could afford one of these M cars.

I left to see other cars at the show. I came back later and saw a different salesman in the process of opening up the M4 to let a teenager in! This salesman was kind enough to let me sit in the car for 30 seconds. I didn't really have a good feel of the inside. It looked and felt nice. When I got out, he promptly locked the car up.

Both cars look very nice from the outside even though neither of them have CF roof. As others have pointed out earlier, the M4 rear wheel gap is taller than the M3's. And the M4's front wheel gap is also slightly taller than the M3's.

The "black" wheels are actually nicer when seen in person. It is very hard to gauge how they really look with the artificial lighting at the show. I am sure they look different (probably much nicer) outdoor.

There has been so much anticipation for me. So much so that when I finally saw the cars, it was kind of anti-climatic for me :-). They were just sitting there quietly, doing nothing, and locked. I guess the next thing is to hear and see the cars in motion.

Enjoy the pictures.

HAhahaa! Dear Sir, Next time we are on a hunt for new cars, let's do it together! The female who doesn't get to see the manuals because she couldn't possibly know how to drive one, and the man who can't buy one, should be the perfect combination!

Hell yeah, just let me know when you want your reward coffee, I'll even let you put milk or cream in to yours, tough I think it is a crime against coffee. Sugar is still not okay by me.

Thank you for the pictures, you Sir are a kind man.

(I'm sending the hubby to a 7 year old kids birthday party with rest of the pact, and I'm running away to Canada. That should teach him not fuck with the bitchiest wife he could ever find. I didn't get anything from his trip back home, and he even brought bones to the dogs. pay back will be known as Lups from now on)

Well done! I will make sure mine will never do this same mistake again. I do admit this is due to a serious lack of training, and one could even say the fault lies with me, but that error will be corrected now.

How did you find the color btw? In your pictures it looks even more like a thing from the miami vice's time, and I'm starting to wonder if it's too girly for me.

I remember saying a month ago, that I don't give a shit about the paint, even went so far that I let the spouse pick one up. the obsessing has begun.

You should've worn yas marina blue colored pants and austin yellow shirts.
That would surely impressed the boss to let you in the car no doubt.

Any idea why M3 is lower than M4?

BTW, LED headlights look really good. After seeing pictures of xenon vs LED, I end up including it in my order.
Now, I just need to decide if I will go with extended or full leather.

Also, is silverstone leather close to white color?
From UK configurator ss leather seems to have some light greyish blue hue to it.

@parky1215, Silverstone interior is light grey, not white.

For the two colors, they look good to me. They are very eye catching. They are may not for everyone. That's why there are different colors to choose from. For YMB, they look just like the pictures I took on my monitor :-). They are not so baby blue but obviously not a dark blue. It may look lighter in sunlight. For AY, it is more gold than yellow IMO. It is very flashy. I wanted AY when the concept car game out last summer. But now I choose the lower key SSII.

They are not for everyone. But if you choose either of them, you are going to love them. They are very different than the run-of-the-mill colors out there.

One thing I want to add, the M3's butt is actually pretty chunky to me, especially the lower part of it, the bumper, when viewed from an angle, not straight on. The M3 rear fenders are wide. But the M4 is pretty aggressive looking as well. Remember, both M3 and M4 have the same wheel width. I think M4's rear looks better, cleaner and more streamline. The M3's rear fenders look very wide because the original 3 Series is not as wide as the 4 Series.

Very nice pictures. Both cars looks good from all your angles, first time I see that. Especially the M4 usually look awkward in the pictures but not here. I might go tomorrow. Was it worth the drive? Did it change your mind about anything when you saw them live compared to only seeing them in pictures? Any tip about parking, is it on-site?

I'm starting to wonder if I might be brave enough for AY after all. It does look very good in the pictures. In fact I've liked it in all pictures of the M4 and it looks quite good on the M3 as well. Just not sure if it might get old quick or that it could feel a bit too much "look at me".

Thanks, @solstice. I think the trick to take car pictures is that you need to shoot from afar so the car is "flattened". Same thing when shooting portraits. I used my Canon 5D Mark II DSLR with a 24-105mm lens. Most pictures you see online now are shot with cell phone cameras. They usually have a wide-angle lens that often times distorts the image. That is especially apparent when the pictures are taken very close to the subject. If you shoot a car from a close distance with a wide angle lens on a cell phone, the images are usually curved. I also corrected the small distortion from my lens with Lightroom.

It is definitely worth a drive up. It maybe the only chance for us westcoasters to see the cars before the launch cars show up. I do drive up to Vancouver very often so it isn't a big deal for me. I left around 9am this morning and I was there by 11:45am. There was about a 15-minute wait at the border. But I am a certified non-terrorist, uh, I mean I have the Nexus pass. So my wait was very short.

I parked at Canada Place, the pier building. If cost $15CDN. There are other parking buildings very close by. If you park at Canada Place, there is another convention going on, and the auto show is in the building next door. Admission for the show is $15CDN.

I spent about 2 hours there. I started driving home around 2:45pm. There was just a little congestion at the tunnel south of Richmond on Highway 99 and the line at the US border wasn't too bad, maybe 20-minute wait. I missed the afternoon traffic in Vancouver and in Everett. I was home by 5pm.

The show was not very crowded when I was there, probably because it was early in the day and it was a weekday. I think Friday and the weekend it will be a mad house there.

Like I said, it was kind of anti-climatic for me. But not thing really changed my mind. I maybe wanting the CCB more. They are HUGE! Especially the front ones. But I won't get them. The interior is nice. Full leather is nice. But I saw other 3 series there without full leather and they are nice too. The carbon fiber trim is very shiny and smooth. Where you are there, take a look at the 4 series with a different carbon trim. It is fully textured and it feels rough, in a nice, raw way. The black wheels actually look pretty good in person. But I think I will stick with he silver wheels. It is more "mainstream" and a safer choice for me.

I really like AY. It is going to be as rare as Phoenix Yellow on the E46 M3. I rarely see an E46 M3 in PY, but when I do see one, it always turns my head. Silver, grey, white, black are the common colors that you will see more often for sure. It will look even meaner with the CF roof! Go for it!

Thanks Sir Loin.
I know what you mean with the CF trim. I guess it's the same type as in the M6s. I've been in many of them where there are both visible finger prints and micro scratches on the shiny finish. My M3 with matte unfinished CF never show either. Not sure why they downgraded to the shiny type.

Yes, finally some great pics of the M4's rear fender flare. Great pics overall. Thanks for sharing!

Anyone else think that the wheel gap might be an "illusion" between the M3/M4? Since the rear overhangs of the M3 are so pronounced, it makes it look like it sits lower. IDK, maybe that just makes me feel better for going with an M4.

Could be that and the lighting. 2 door looks better than 4 door IMO.

M4 looks great but it absolutely needs spacers, that's for sure! More than the M3 does. Great pics by the way! I really wondering when the first decent picture of an AW or MW will show up...
