Oh dear - new RS4 is a V8
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/defa...?storyId=25192
Hot Audis can be a mixed bag but the previous RS4 remains very much a high point. And after details of the new RS4 leaked recently Audi has finally broken its silence and revealed more. And we thought normally aspirated V8s were deadAnd, yes, it will get the RS5's 4.2-litre 450hp V8. A distinct lack of turbos is unusual in this day and age but something to celebrate, the old RS4's soundtrack being among the mightier of recent times. Meaningfully, Audi has included pictures of fat oval exhaust tips among the teaser images, suggesting that noise will be a big part of the RS4 experience. We hope so. There's certainly plenty of Technik underpinning the RS4's predictably impressive Vorsprung (0-62 in 4.7 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph or 174mph 'on request') too. Every toy in the Quattro GmbH cupboard has been thrown at the chassis, which includes the latest crown gear differential running a default 40:60 front/rear split and torque vectoring as standard. As much as 70 per cent of the drive torque can be sent forwards or 85 per cent rearwards as the black boxes dictate. And if it's the latter you'll be wanting to make sure you opted for the Sport Differential, which on the S4 unleashes previously unheard of driftability. It should be standard, by all rights. Seven-speed S Tronic among RS5 techMuch of the powertrain (seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch gearbox for example) and chassis tech (electric steering that 'nudges' you back on line included) comes from the RS5, which does raise some cause for concern. The RS5 majors on the technology, but falls short dynamically in many respects, so we'll have to hope Audi has been listening and addressed some of the concerns; numb steering, snatchy drivetrain and unyielding damping among them. Options for the RS4 include ceramic brakes and Audi's cross-linked Dynamic Ride Control suspension, another RS hallmark. If Audi is looking for inspiration to avoid RS5 style criticisms it could do worse than use the old RS4 as a blueprint. But then, why not just buy one of them instead? Looking at the specs it's surprising how close the old car runs the new one, being just 30hp down and a tenth slower to 62mph. And there was a manual version. Good ones are still making strong money - as much as £30K - and a quick browse of the classifieds reveals a plentiful supply. RS6 style arch extensions now includedAnd though UK pricing is yet to be confirmed for the new car, a price of 76,600 Euros has been confirmed for Germany, 20,000 Euros more than an S4 Avant. Here in the UK the S4 costs just shy of £40K, so you can do the maths and if your number starts with a 6 you may not be a million miles out. It certainly will by the time you add the Sport Differential, DRC and a few other toys. It is, of course, a good thing that the RS4 is back. We just hope the spirit of the previous one has been captured and lives on.

It's pretty special if BMW make the next M3 a V6 IMO.

They've already confirmed it's an I6, so it's just back to the E46 days, when the E46 with less power than the same motor in the old RS4, wasn't capable of winning comparisons. I6's certainly have more history with BMW than V8's, even if the turbo(s) are a good bit of sacrilege.
Given that the F80 will have more power than the E9x M3, which had no problems with the B7 RS4 or RS5, I don't see the new F80 having any trouble with the new RS4. |

And, with a tune and breathing mods, the M3 should be in the 500+ hp range! I was hoping audi would use the 4.0 tfsi motor from the new s6. |

It's the same 4.2L V8 that they've had lying around for a number of years, including in the R8, RS5, A8, and last-gen RS4. It's not new tech, and it will be phased out completely after the second generation R8.

What will be more interesting is the upcoming TTV8's for the S6/S7 line and if they choose to tune those in the future for RS models.

I wonder if they fixed the valves becoming fouled with gunk because of the DI?
The owners of the last RS4 are having quite a time having to have their engines dismantled and the valves cleaned by hand, because of the direct injection design of the Audi V8. |

I suspect the S54 V8 will be sorely missed. I do understand the subtext about the I6's heritage.
To OP: nice post. A mate of mine w/ the B7 RS4 is loath to give it up, ie, he's not! Still as much in love w/ it as when he bought it. One of the very great Audis and a lesson for the RS division when developing future RSs.

agree with the steering....I will definitely take a look at the new audi since it has the V8 (still love the V8 sound)...but if they can't get the steering feel right...no chance.

Have you not heard? This is a standard feature VAG decided their top daily driver sedan could not be without.

My brother just picked up a 2007 RS4 with 43000KM (26000 miles) on it....... the V8 in the RS4 is quite a gem, extremely similar to the S65 IMO, albeit without the aggressive induction roar. Since the V8 in the new RS4 is essentially the same engine, I am sure it will be great too!!!
It is really sad that the next M3 won't have a NA V8 under the hood, I guess that is all the more reason to hold on to my E90. I am sure that M won't disappoint with whatever engine they decide to put into the F80/82/83 M3. Lets hope that BMW don't forget that the "M" in BMW stands for "Motor". |

"Although they would never admit it, Audi's engineers have taken a leaf out of BMW's book by mounting a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers inside the valley between the V8's cylinder heads. And like the BMW engine, Audi's 4.0-liter puts the inlet valves on the outside and the exhaust valves facing in." - Edmunds Insideline They made a BMW engine..... Again.
