To sum this up for me, I wouldn't be happy knowing that an artificial sound was being piped in through the speakers just to keep all of us happy that we have a great sounding car. It's like I'm bullshitting myself into believing it sounds great when in reality most of the inside cabin sound is fake.
I'd rather just drive quieter on the inside listening to my music and then roll the windows down when I feel like hearing the real thing even if it's not perfect. That's all I have to say on this matter.... |

I have disabled mine and can't really tell a difference. Low RPMs seemed a little quieter, but everything else the same. If there was an option to make active sound louder, I would do it. I had it turned back on, and have no regrets. I have also unplugged the exhaust flaps so they are left wide open and the car is really loud inside now-proving to me that 97% of the noise you hear in the cabin is actual real exhaust noise. All the comments about not feeling right about having active sound in the car is laughable to me at this point.

You probably listen to instruments like guitars and violins, what with all their hollow bodies providing amplification. I refuse to hear any amplification of any kind. As such, the only thing I listen to is yodelling. Now THAT is a pure sound. Why can't BMW make the new M sound like yodelling?

I'm going to mod my exhaust, so I want the sound to be as "pure" as possible. I'll be doing my exhaust ASAP, so I'd like to try get my dealer to defeat the Active Sound upon delivery in hopes that they'll do it free at that time along with dealer prep stuff.
So what specifically do I tell my US Dealer to do upon delivery to defeat the Active Sound?

When the dealer reads the car's data via OBD there is a folder with all control units. one of it is ASD. put "deactivate ASD" from no to yes. that's it good luck! |

well, this is your personal opinion. every ear is different. also taste. to me it is a huge difference. i prefer it without asd. and of course you can hear it. and also it is not a question of louder or quieter. the synthetic touch is gone, that's it. the idea of this thread is not rising again the discussion whether one likes asd or not. it is for those who actually do not like it and looking for a solution to disable it without coding themselves. decide for yourself, if you like it better without. if not, return it to ASD. simple. |

If it can be turned off without to much trouble, I'll be first in line to try it as the idea of artificial bothers me, then decide. BMW has turned into a smart marketing company, for some reason they like this effect, maybe I'll be missing something if turned off but I won't be able to make that call till I hear the car without it.

The 3% noise is just not that big of a deal to me. Car sounds PC correct as far as how loud it is. Do wish that on sport plus that it was a little more raw. Overall though I think the sound of the car is a good compromise for a GT, which is really what it is.

I will be testing this out this weekend and will report back on my thoughts.
As I said previously, I never had issue with ASD in the first place but I am just curious what the difference is. Mostly I'm just concerned it might interfere with bluetooth phone conversations.

BTW, there's a really easy way to test this 3%: with a quality Mic record your car inside and then outside. I've done it and they sound like completely different cars. Inside sounds, oddly, like a 4L V8 Audi to me. Outside sounds like a diesel shrimp boat. that's a hell of a 3%! |

I checked with my dealer and since I'm doing ED my dealership won't be doing anything with the OBD when it's "re-delivered" stateside. So I'll try to have them do the work when I go in for my first service.
