Why am I hesitating on buying an M3?
I've come across a sweet deal on a new 2015 sahkir M3.
I've had double digit BMW's over the past 15 years. I do get bored at times, so now I'm getting cold feet about taking the plunge in fear I will discover I may not want the car after the honeymoon wears off. So how many here have had any regret or buyers remorse on your M3/M4 purchase? Closet thing I've had to the M3 is an M5 (2008). Didn't like the transmission on that one, too heavy, too expensive, hated the wood trim in it, heavy on fuel....but here is the worse thing about my situation. I live a block from my office. So I drive 1 min to get to work and back, and live in a place where 4 or 5 months of the year we have snow (Alberta, Canada) So any large dollar purchase like this has me pause for concern that it just might not make a whole bunch of good sense to have a car that I drive for a minute twice a day, which I can use on clear roads 7 months/12 (sometimes less). Yet there is something compelling about this M3 that I just don't find in other cars (for that matter, BMW as a brand seems to hold that X factor for me, hence my multiple purchases). Oh...what to do... |

don't buy it since you have doubts.
go and test drive other cars til you have no doubts. asking others to validate their purchases will not solve your concerns.

I do too--in fact, I walk to work every day. When I drive the new M4 on the weekends it's even more special. Keeping the miles low is an added plus.

There are a hundred threads just like this one already. No one on this forum can make that decision for you, but based on the thread, I would say that you should skip the M3.

The M3 is not as fun as I wished, it is a big car that feels big, but is very powerful and can carry a family (I got two kids) so it works very well for what I need.
In your case if you are looking for the most fun for the buck I would look at M2 / lotus, and if you are looking just to show off then a Masserati

Part of owning this car, as was the others (but more in this case), is the hobby of caring for it: the polishing, cleaning, looking out in the garage to see it shine. Saturday and Sunday drives (weather permitting). The visceral feeling of the torque.
I'm not a racer for sure, and as far as I know we don't even have a track around here. Being part of a club sounds nice, perhaps a club drive to the next province over (I guess there is some wine tasting trips taken etc). Something to do that isn't all about work, that is about all I do 90 percent of the time. So that's the positive side of my ownership of a M3 I just worry I'll wake up one day and go "what have I done"...

OP - not sure what to tell you... M3 is my childhood dream car, and this is my 2nd one (before this I had the E90 M3). I had zero such hesitations. The only hold out for me was the money. And now at my age/job I'm not at all stretched to buy the car. If you have to stretch to afford it I'd say stay well away. Otherwise drive the damn thing and take if from there. |

Id say definitely test drive it, everyone has their preferences when it comes to cars, I drove it and fell in love with it which made my decision a lot easier

I had considered a 2 year lease. 46 grand I also considered a 4 year owners choice, try and sell in two years. (lower payment, makes me less troubled to drive it a block and back relative to the price to drive)

If you want to be sure here's what I would do.
Go test drive it and walk away from the dealership right after. Let this experience soak in for a couple of weeks. Not days, weeks. If you still have the envy of the experience after that period, go and test drive it again. Walk away once more. After doing this, if there is a third time then you can seriously consider it. |

That's not a bad idea on the re-visit for driving a few times.
The one I'm looking at is waiting to be plucked at a 1.9 interest rate and good pricing (1.15 percent in my case on a 48 month owners choice) I'm having this conversation with myself as I type this about pulling the pin (lock it up)

Expeditous
Lazy Cold Have a small dog that has to smell every tree and flower, that I take to work every day. (slows me up) When I leave, for example, I may go to the bank after, which saves me time as sometimes I"m working 14 hour days.

If you have limited transportation needs and value caring for the car, why not go with a classic car of some kind instead of a modern car? It's a great car but I'd skip the M3 based on what you've described.

Don't laugh
I like the Jeep Rubicon Unlimited (had a gecko green 2013 as well-Sold) One can make a hobby just by all the aftermarket things you can do to those. (It's still not as thrilling a ride as the M3)

Test Drive it first, when I mean test drive it. I mean REALLY test it out. Any car can be driven at less than 40mph. Open her up a little and see if it fits you. iykwim :P
