1,400 miles first Wax
So need to get some wax on the new car, YMB. Can I get away with simply putting a layer of carnuba on or is further prep needed - i.e. clay or maguires mirror glaze that has the lightest abrasive?

If it needs clay then it'll most probably need a polish. If you're not too worried about this then I'd do a simple clay, tar and glue remover and then use a glaze as you've mentioned and then top it off with a wax. I have to be honest though that this feels a bit of half a job. For the first detail I'd go the whole route and then coat it. If you do a thorough job then you can just top up the LSP as you go, I did exactly this on Christmas Eve and that'll see me through to the spring.

Just pay and have it ceramic coated. Then maintain it with Clearshine. Done.

There is no right way, it just depends on how picky you are and how much money you want to spend.
A minimalist approach is to clay it and then use a high quality synthetic sealant (e.g., Sonax PNS, Zanio, many others). This will provide durable protection with minimal cost, time and effort. If you are not sure if you need to clay, put your hand in a plastic bag and run it over the surface of the car. If it feels gritty, you should clay. GL!

I'm just going to point this out....
Can you name a single manufacturer who offers a factory ceramic coating on top of the clearcoat? No? Think about that for a second. These manufacturers are leaving $1000/car (which would be very high margin as well) on the table? Maybe. But why, if it truly offers the protection the durability marketed?

I would guess because more than 90% of the car buying population could care less about the appearance of their cars after the 1st month or so. People just want a clean car for the cheapest price. They see a car swirled to hell but as long as there's no dirt they're happy. Car manufacturers have been trending towards thinner but harder clear coat to save money. Great for the average joe but that leaves less clear coat for polishing so the less you can polish the better. Thus the solution is PPF and coatings.
