What happens exactly when the rev limiter kicks in?

Hi: Kind of a novice regarding BMW,so I have a question on the rev limiter,say on a 2020 M4...does it shut the fuel supply off,or does it screw up the ignition,for that short time?Thanks,Huck50

It's a soft limiter so it doesn't bounce at redline, it kind of reaches redline then tapers off if you hold it there, kind fo weird

I know in my E92 M3, fuel is cut at redline. I believe it's the same with the S55!
