M4 GT4
I wonder if it is simply the "facelift" race version or a potential street edition...

Did they ever unveil the fully uncovered GT4? I recall pics, but still camo'd. As far as I know, these have not yet been released (not until 2018) so none are in customers hands yet. I suspect the unveil will also come with timelines and perhaps pricing.

Honestly don't know. I thought the original announcement was 2018. I'll dig up the threads when I get to work.
Edit: looks like answer is already posted below, but nevertheless here are the threads: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1288461 http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1333184 |

Yes indeed, I looked at the original press release and it does mention release for the 2018 season. Maybe the GT4 we've seen thus far are independent efforts not related to the factory GT4.

The cars that are running in the Northern and Southern GT4 cups are cars put together by Team Ekris. This car is from BMW Motorsport and will be racing in the Nurburgring 24 hour race. Customer cars should be available later this year or early next year. We should see them in IMSA in the GS field next year.

Ahhhhh, ok - I didn't know they were making another performance version of the M4.

This is not another performance or cosmetics edition, but rather an all out race car not legal for street use.

Alternatively, if you have a more liberal perspective on the concept of a "street version" of a race car, you could suggest that the M4 GTS is the street version of the M4 GT4 (and similarly that the E92 M3 GTS was the street version of the E92 M3 GT4). I would suggest we shy away from that because - although those GTS cars are fine products - this type of thinking sort of dilutes the real reason behind street homologation. And that is, originally, the idea was to build a street legal car in order to qualify for a race series, as specified by the rules. In this case though, an M4 GTS has nothing to do with the M4 qualifying for any series. And this is not least because its specs are completely different from the M4 GT4 race car. In fact, if there are any homologation rules at play - and I honestly have no idea if there are, but I'll bet some forum members could probably comment on that - simply building the standard M4 would probably be all that is necessary. The reason is, this is a GT4 class vehicle and the whole idea is that it will feature minimal modification for track duty. |
