You know your wife better than us so you should have asked yourself before getting that color: Is she going to be offended even if she doesn't drive the car? or she is going to get a laugh and wouldn't care. If it is the later then no big deal it is a funny joke and you got what you want but if it is not then Why would you like to offend the one that you supposedly love the most? I'm not trying to be hard on you I'm just being honest.
I appreciate the honesty/sincerity of your post, and understand where you are coming from. I didn't do this to rub it in her face or sneak around to get the color I wanted. I actually didn't like it either when I saw the pictures. I told her before I even ordered the car I wanted to keep the color a surprise so it could add to the fun of the delivery. She is fine with that. If I really thought it would be painful for her, I would have discussed it first.

This is correct. The post is meant in jest more than true concern. Felt like a good weekend thread to laugh at my expense.

I am glad most people are either seeing the humor in it or giving good advice on how to handle the situation.

Now if I have completely botched it, and my wife goes ballistic, it's a lease and I could always get out early.

We did. "I'm buying a BMW."

"yeah, what kind?"

"three or four series"

I did the same thing. I didn't like AY from the photographs until I saw it in person. I don't know what it is with that color but the photos don't really do it justice. In person the color is beautiful. Hard to miss for sure, but beautiful.

My wife was surprised with my choice when I brought it home - I've always bought black or dark blue BMWs. She knew I wasn't doing that again (can't keep it clean and this was my first M - I wanted an M color).

But what can I say - I fell in love with the color when I saw it in person, and so has my wife. Kids love it as well. Kids nicknamed the car "Austin" after the color.

Agree that AY works best with black accents. (Subjective of course but IMHO)

Don't worry it's not me being sneaky. There is a post further down where she was ok with being in the dark about the color choice.

This is your wife, dude. Involve her.

If my wife were getting a new X5 and wouldn't tell me the color saying it's a surprise, and then decided to get the color I liked the least, I would be very disappointed. I wouldn't think it's funny, I wouldn't think it's a joke, and every single time I saw the color, I would feel negatively about it. The level of disappointment is in proportion to how much I disliked the color. Bonus points if I've been especially vocal about not liking the color.

On the other hand, if she surprised me with the color I liked the most, I would be appreciative because it shows that she values and respects my opinion which strengthens our relationship. After all, marriages are generally supposed to be a long term thing where both parties try to make the other happy.

I guess it all depends whose car it's going to be. Shared car? Of course, it's up to both people. What about if it's her car that she's going to be driving and she ended up surprising me with a color that she loved but I hated? I'd be happy for her. And then I'd give her tons of shit about it nonstop. And we'd both laugh about it.

I clarified the original post. She was fine with leaving the color choice up to me and doesn't mind being surprised. It's not a shared car. Ironically she actually has a new X5 she got last year, and yes she choose the color.

Come on, dude... Of course she's going to say that. She loves you. And she trusts you to make the right decision. She wants you to "show" her that you appreciate and respect her opinion.

This is not a question of whose car is it going to be. You're in a relationship, a marriage. Everything is shared. Me = We. And this is not about the type of person you are or the type of person your wife is. This is relationship management 101. Because even if she does like the color in person, you're screwed because you still got the color she didn't like.

She obviously loves you. So the worst part of it all will be that she will probably act excited because she doesn't want to ruin your moment of picking up your beautiful new car. Especially since you guys are traveling to Europe. She will do everything she can to be happy for you. But inside, she will be freaking the fuck out.

My man, you need to trust me on this.

I'm willing to bet the op is in his 40's and has a few years and miles done with the same wife. According to my experience there is no way to generalize any advice when it comes to us ladies, but I can indeed tell you this: He can probably buy a car and crap on it and she wouldn't notice.

I've had mine since august. I can honestly say I doubt my hubby has any idea what I have in the garage, and if he did, he'd just shake his head and ask what's for dinner.

Only car people think others care, but she probably will fake smile while she is thinking about a shopping list or bathroom renovations.

Only we who have little enough lives to have a handle in a car forum would care.

(in all seriousness, I bet this thread was written for fun, so lets take it such)

Oh, my hubby has driven my car twice, he thought it felt like an Astra.

I'm the same as the majority of people on this thread, I hated AY until I saw it in person, and it looks really good with black accents, especially with the side skirts. (Sorry for poor quality photos, took with my phone)

Oh I will definitely get rid of the chrome on my car. Black grills, side marker, and body color reflectors ASAP. Don't think I would like the black side skirt on an M3. Looks nice on the M4.

Unfortunately, no tint for me. PA is crazy and completely backwards when in comes to window tint.

Still don't see why BMW can't offer a black out appearance package.

The tint is an overkill easily, so are mirror caps in cf.

Ay is a fucker to modify. It has a way to bring out weaknesses and I truly hated the ay in an M3...

Then I saw the first one. Now I am trying to learn to keep my mouth shut.

In an M3 it will need a few cf things to balance the brightness but unlike the M4, it doesn't have so many things to hide (see tue signature below).

I am willing to bet two dollars AND the 25 cents I just found that your wife may hate the color for a few days max, then she will realize that her man has balls. That in our mind also means maximizing the pain when needed, but this paint will not require for you to wear a cup at all times.

It is beautiful, I love mine.

... And then I don't. It makes really easy the play date hunters to corner me, and I can tell you , if anyone needs a list, all the most annoying themes for birthday parties.

Sure, a good exhaust system cuts down the invitations by a lot, and I truly love the way girls especially come and ask about the car, and I can see the interest in their eyes. The hope that they will also care one day instead of becoming door dingers keep me alive at the cat themed parties.
