XIce 3 or Alpin PA4 for Denver?
Guys, thoughts on the two Michelin tire options for the winter?
I have WS80s on my beater Accord, and they perform quite well in the snow/Ice, but frankly drive like shit on dry pavement. Anyone have experience with the PA4s?

The PA4 is pretty good. You may also consider a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2. They're the best IMO.

I have PA4s on my winter wheels again this season. Last year they were great. I'm not in Colorado though.

I have a new set of PA4's on mine after having PA3's last winter. So far so good through the first snow. Blizzaks always felt mushy to me and these feel better.

My thought was, i'm getting the winter tires for the wet and snow, not for the dry. Just for the dry i could have used the summer contis, they were manageable in 20-30 deg whether just fine, that's why i went with the X-ice over a winter performance.

OP - I've had my PA4s for about 3 weeks and driven through a few snows in Denver/Breck and have been pretty happy. They aren't too squishy in the dry if you get the pressures right (currently running 32/35 PSI). The bad news is you may have trouble finding them this late in the year. I ordered mine in late September, and still had to wait 6 weeks.

Just a follow up note on Hakkas. I put a set of R3s on my F80 and at around 32 PSI they are a handful on dry, warm roads (which can be fun). Moderate turns feel unstable and acceleration in 2nd or 3rd gears easily engages traction control. Panic stops also seem to require a lot more distance. I'll mess with tire pressures a bit more. Today's bomb cyclone should provide a good test for non-dry roads.

I have had the Hakka 2 which i would consider similar to the X-ice 3, and great for ice or compacted snow, but was not very good in the slush or sand/mag chloride mix that can accumulate to either side of the wheel paths on the road. Changing lines could be an adventure. My PA4 were a lot better in that regard, and better for the cold dry days and keeping a performance feel, at the expense of the ice and pure snow traction of the Hakka 2 and X-ice. I would like to personally try the Hakka 8/9 without studs.

On dry roads though, even with different tire pressures, the deep tread and squishy tread blocks give the traction control system fits. I had a hard time out-accelerating a Nissan Leaf the other day...can't get anywhere close to full power. Put it in MDM mode and its another story. I ran Xice3 on an xDrive F30 and while snow/ice performance wasn't as good as the Hakka R3s, it was a better compromise for dry street use. |

Thanks for the feedback
What a storm. Sometimes could not see the front of my car when driving home. Ground clearance is definitely an issue, especially in the neighborhood streets with that kind of storm. |
