My guess is no. The new LSD is rough. It clunks, clangs, jolts and bangs if not treated to it's liking which is seems about as easy to understand as a woman

I have had mine a month and covered 800 miles. In the last week I have noticed a noise as you describe on 3 occasions. It happens at low low speed and lasts only a few seconds then completely disappears. It happened this afternoon after a 50 mile brisk run on country roads then a drive into a small town for a couple of miles at 30mph. I went round a roundabout took 3rd exit on the left (I am in the UK) drove about 30 yards then turned right into a supermarket car park when the clanging occurred. Parked car briefly then travelled a couple of miles to a large empty car park near where I live and tried to recreate the noise with no success. On previous occasions travelling at less than 30mph in a straight line.

I had the exact same thing happen to me twice yesterday.
First I was driving in normal traffic in a slight bend when I heard the sound. It sounded like someone threw a buch of empty coke cans on the road. So I looked in my rear view mirror to check if that was the case, but didn't see anything. So I assumed it was something else. I also thought I could be someone extracting a large aluminum ladder nearby, cause that could sound about the same. About 10 km further I turned in to a narrow street quite slowly and heard the exact same noise. I stopped to check under the car to see the exhaust wasn't coming of something like that. Didn't see anything. Dove home and haven't heard it since. |

When I drove the M5 for the first time, that noise really put me off. What I now know is that this is the sound of the new electronically controlled LSD. The F80/82 has the identical unit to the M5 so I'm not surprised to hear the same thing in my F80. Doesn't sound as loud as I remembered it in the M5 though.

That sucks I hate weird noises, when the e92 would start up in cold weather I honestly didn't even want to drive the car. Then they told me oh its normal, well to me no its not normal, never have I had a car make that noise before and why didn't the car do it til 30k miles if it was normal.all I know if it were new like that when I drove it I wouldn't of bought it then I got stuck w it doing that.

500+ miles so far and I have not heard any banging noise from the rear yet. Now that I have said it, I am sure I will hear it today.
With my old E46 M3, it had some grinding noise from the diff from time to time. All I had to do was to do a bunch of figure-8s in a parking lot and it goes away for a long time. The figure-8s helped to lube the gears in the diff. Not sure if this would help in the new electronically controlled LSD. The old one had a mechanical LSD.

These high performance differentials are likely to make all sorts of unsettling sounds on turns- particularly tight turns at low speeds on a dry surface- nature of the beast. If some of you drove my Wrangler - that has ARB air lockers- the sounds would horrify you. Just good technology sounding off in appreciation.

M4 Clattering or Clacking noise!
Same here guys!
I have done 100 miles in the M4 and have had very brief & slight grinding noises, very occasionally. Not enough to worry about. I then had a rather worrying spell. I was driving along the road and I heard what sounded like driving over 3 loose metal road manhole covers in succession - a couple of seconds apart. On the final one a loud grating noise followed and I actually stopped the car to look underneath - nothing there. I drove the car home fine without noise and the next day with no problems? Part of me thinks that amount of noise must be something, but fine since? I checked the quick reference and full manuals and found these two interesting references in each document referring to the 'Drive train' They are worth a read but quote that the direct connection between engine and drive system can lead to acoustic feedback of the torque when load off and to expect clattering or clacking noise which is of no concern. Thoughts? |

I've had the sound a few times over the first 2000 miles as well, within the first hundred feet from starting from a stop at a light or something. It doesn't appear to affect the way the car drives, so I'm not that worried about it, but I would like to know what it is.
Let's be more specific on describing the sound . . . mine is a metallic clanging noise almost like a small heat shield falling off or something. I wouldn't call it a bang. It doesn't SOUND like it's diff related, otherwise it would be heavier.

I experienced this as well. Mostly likely drivetrain lashing.
To recreate it, coasting in high gear at a low speed, upon application of throttle you'll get a clunk from the rear. Just play in the drivetrain, all vehicles have it. It's just more noticeable with the solid subframe mounts on this car.

It's not drive train lash. Yes, this car has some of that, and BMW says in the manual that it's normal for this car. It happens at low speeds and low powertrain load.

Are you estimating the sound to be internal to the diff itself?
