ED travel suggestions: Summer in EU
Got confirmation for a June 24 delivery date for my M4. All I know right now is start in Munich (obv), and I want to end in Barcelona. What are some must see things on the way?
Thanks! |

one mistake I see a lot of people make is trying to see as many different places as possible. This is a common rookie error for travel. Only suggestion I would make is to spend at least a few days in each location. Much better to do 3-4 days in one spot then 1-2 days in two spots.

How many days do you have? Would be easier to make a suggestion if we knew days and types of things you like. If it was me I'd probably hit Belagio, Nice/Monaco, then try and head over to Bordeaux for some days touring my favourite wineries etc.

Leaving Miami on the 22nd, picking up the car on the 24th, flying home on the 1st or 2nd. Barcelona is the only for sure destination right now. Maybe Geneva and then head through the French Riviera toward Spain? That's probably it.

sounds like you will have 7 days with the car, i think that will be a lot of driving, you will be passing through a lot of cool places but won't have any time to stop by

I couldn't get the link in the email from my CA to work, but I just found that out moments before you replied. Thanks for the heads up though.

Two days to get to Paris, a day or two there, drop the car off, high speed train to Barcelona and two to three days there?

Wow 7 days and you wanna drive across the continent? We spent over two weeks there in 2014 and barely saw anything. Ended up in Paris for 4-5 days alone.
I realized that the one thing most people say to themselves is this: who knows when I will come back so let's see as much as possible. No, you must plan and act like you WILL come back. So spend the week in Germany. Explore Munich, Fussen, drive the Alps and go to Salzburg. That is your week. Next time you go back to Europe explore another country for a week or two. Break it down. It's more enjoyable that way. |

The first week of my trip I spent two days in Munich to explore without a car. Picked up the car on day 3 and went straight to Fussen for a night and checked out the nearby castles. Left early to drive to Lake Como via the Stelvio pass the next morning. Stayed in Bellagio for two days. Then headed to Nice for 3 nights. Eze is nearby and pretty cool to explore.
Also keep in mind the days the drop of locations are open. I think Munich was the only one with Saturday hours.

Then go somewhere nearby. In the end it is your trip and your call. But since you came here asking for advice that's what we recommend. Austria, Italy, etc. are a better choices than all the way to Barcelona. What are you going to see when you spend a lot of time driving there?

FWIW, I drive anywhere from 500-750 miles a week for work, so I don't mind traveling. Just want to see some variety.

Munich to Amsterdam to Brussels, and then Paris. It's a trek but if you have no issue putting in the miles, you'll get the variety you seek. It would help if we knew if you were interested in museums, food, etc.
If you just want to enjoy your "company" in different settings, the above will do the trick.

Definitely into the museums, and good food, but this is the plan, for now... We are going to Zurich, then straight to Paris. Stay in Oaris for 2-3 days, drop the car off, then take the train to Barcelona to meet up with our friend. |

That's a saner plan than what I suggested. Make sure you get some Swiss chocolates (Laderach ). I have heard Belgium chocolate is better, but I didn't get there during my ED.
