What's going to happen to me?
Update at the end of the post.
Just looking for some opinions on the following situation, plus golovko wanted to see this as a thread. So I have an order placed for an Austin Yellow M3 and am set for ED this July. None of my friends or family know what color I have chosen. I figured it would be an additional surprise as part of the trip. My wife is fine with it being a surprise and I asked her about that before I ordered. I was originally thinking MG or MW, but saw AY in person and really liked it. Now here's the fun part. My wife and I always made fun of AY as a color. Even laughed when Roundel described the color as "urinetown". In fact, she still calls it that. I agreed until I saw the color about 3 months ago. Now I play along so she isn't suspicious. She will see the car for the first time at delivery. What do you think the reaction will be? She has never seen the color in person. FYI my son's 2 favorite colors are YMB and AY, so he won't care. UPDATE The reveal occurred and my wife at first said "Is that yours?" Then she laughed and after looking at it said she liked it multiple times at different points of the day. All is good and of course it looks better in person.

IMO bad move but I am sure she will play nice. What does she think you have ordered?

I guess what really matters is: Who's car will this be for? If *shared* between the two of you, you might want to let her know.
If it's YOUR car; heck, it's YOURS. You'll be driving it. What matters most (in this particular case) is what will make YOU happy. Personally, I saw the color in bright light and thought it wasn't for me. When I order my M4 in July it'll be SS II because: 1) It'll be my car 2) It's the color I prefer 3) It'll make me happy. Assuming the car will be yours, follow the above 3 steps. If it ends up being a "shared" car, let me know. I know a guy who does great work with vinyl... And clearly I'm not a *bold* individual; otherwise, I would be ordering an SO or AY color... |

Agreed if its your car then its what makes you happy at the end of the day. Hopefully she is the type that enjoys making you happy and whether or not she even likes the AY is irrelevant, because its your favorite color.
IMO even if she doesn't like it, I have a feeling it will grow on her. But at first I'm sure she will think you are joking, given the history you two share in making fun of it haha |

I would say it really depends on how your wife is as a person, some ladies would make a big deal out of this and some probably wouldn't so much. In the end you probably know her better than any of us do

When you go to get it at the Welt, just say "Ohhh, Noooo. That can't be my car!! My car is AW"

Who cares what she thinks, it's your car. Once she get's inside and goes for a ride, she will forget all about the color. Plus AY is way better in person with the black 19's.

I was in the same boat. Saw YMB on SS at the auto show and my wife called it the "Smurf-mobile". Long and behold 8 months later I broke the news that I put in an order for the same color combo.

You'd be all set if you bought an M4 but since you bought an M3, you may have some explaining to do.
Who cares what she says! If she's not paying for it, tell her to get in the back seat and stay out of your dream. It's a fresh ///M car, she will love it!

Some of you guys are funny, while I'm worried for some.
It would probably be even funnier and scarier if you let your wives/girlfriends read this post and answer. I'll have to make sure I update this after I pick the car up.

If she freaks out (as some here seem to worry?) it probably speaks to much bigger issues dude. My guess is she first assumes you are joking, then is 'ok....' Then just enjoys the car then comes around. Still, to avoid a less-than-magical delivery moment at the Welt (which YOU clearly want, right?) I would give her the 'so.....a little surprise for you...' Talk on flight over. Ease her into the idea.... That way her first instinct won't disappoint you, which could lead to resentment later....
