AC on when starting the car
AC seems to be turned on for the first 5 minutes on every start, regardless if AC is on or not
Has anyone noticed that on theirs? If so, how to turn it off? I don't need the AC to be on every time I start my car. Edit: To clarify, it blows cold air even if the AC indicator light is off.

Try adjusting the blend wheel next to the vents?

I will try that and see. But I don't recall from my previous BMWs that adjusting the vent blend knob makes colder air than ambient air on cold start.

Cold Air
I have noticed the same thing. It is definitely compressor-cooled air on start-up...no doubt about it.
If you notice, in about 10 minutes, it goes to ambient air. Here's what I'm thinking. Given usually during start up, the air in the cabin, especially if parked outside, is possibly more humid than dry. It would probably make sense to run the compressor for a short period to dry the cabin. Then, deactivate the compressor if the interior climate control A/C button is set to "off." I'm hoping that is the case...that would be cool (literally!) -Brian |

Mine does not turn on when starting the car. I too never use the AC unless it is scorching outside, or raining and need to keep the windows from fogging.
I prefer windows down, fresh air and the sound of the exhaust! |

I think you can save a profile that will have it off when you start the car.. that may be why some do and some dont.

I don't have the car but it sounds like something related to the climate control within iDrive.
For the people who had their A/C's come on - was it even hot out? I thought I remember somewhere that you can set the controls to cool down the interior before you enter.

I know my F30 always is on (at least the fan) when I turn the car on (unless it's been only a few mins and I turned the air off before getting back in). It's like the default is where you had it before unless it was off, then it turns it on the lowest fan setting.
I forget if you had the AC off but the fan on if it would turn the AC on. Time to test! I dont think that's the case or else I would've probably whined in the winter about my ac always being on. So I guess 2 questions: 1) What was your fan setting when you got out of the car for more than 15 mins and 2) what was the thermo (AC on / off)? My guess is it goes to "last AC on/off setting" and last fan setting unless it was off then it would default to lowest fan setting. Further testing is necessary! (Or we could read the manual I guess...) |

I've tried EVERY setting possible before turning off the car and it will ALWAYS start with the air on. Even the Genius said it's a default, although that means nothing. But now I'm jealous that some cars don't have this default when starting.

The climate control will always come on when turning On the car. Just press the AC button to off and the actual AC won't come back on unless you turn it on.
