I locked my keys in my trunk....
Earlier today I was cleaning my trunk and forgot that I set the keys down in the trunk. After cleaning I closed the trunk then quickly realized the keys were left in there and the car was locked. That was my only key fob and I no longer have access to the trunk. AAA guy came and was able to get the front door unlocked but that didn't do much for me because you need the key fob to unlock the car in order to open the trunk.
Does anyone know what I can do in this situation? I know I can call bmw assistance but since I am the second owner, the bmw assistance app is not under my name and that would take 2-3 days to switch over. Also, does anyone know how much a key fob is for our cars? I've heard $400-550. Probably worth spending to save myself from making this rookie mistake again... :/ Thanks for the help! |

If your front door is unlocked can’t you turn on the ignition button and press the unlock button on your door or trunk release button?
You might be able to pop off the side bolster on rear seat and get you enough room to get a wire and go fishing for your key |

I thought you can't close your trunk if key is inside when car is lock already. It happened to me few times(more than 5) and trunk just automatically open itself to remind me the key is inside the trunk.

For some reason, my car can never detect the key when it is in the trunk. I once left the key in the trunk while the car was running and it gave me the "fob not in vehicle" message.

My assumption is, since my m4 is 2015, my car does not include that.

Do you have folding rear seats? Did you figure this out yet or is your key still locked in the trunk? |

I don't even think I paid for it. But yeah, there's no reason to not be able to get into a car these days. Even my crappy Chevy has an app where I can even honk the horn while my wife is driving.

Went to test theory... sadly not sure if removing side bolster will help much.
You’ll see a small wedge of green. That’s a green box I have in my trunk so while you “can” fish a wire back there, it’ll be awfully hard to see. |

I think if you don’t have Comfort Access, your car WILL lock you out of the trunk.
CA will not allow you to lock the vehicle with your key in car/trunk. I didn’t have CA either from factory but added the Bimmertech retrofit so now I don’t worry about it lol. Best of luck. |

What about the second key fob? Can't you unlock with that and retrieve your primary fob?
BMW NA should be able to remote unlock if all else fails.

I can't believe comfort access not standard on this car before.
What kind of luxury car doesn't have this luxury feature? Even my 2011 Nissan Altima had this feature standard.

The best, cheapest, and probably quickest option is the app. BMW might ask for documents to prove you are owner. Same thing happened to me and opened car with app.
Removing seats will not help. |

Dealerships will wield a coat hanger and go fishing for the trunk release handle located in the center of the trunk lid. It even glows in the dark. You can expose a small gap between the seats and fish the coat hanger back there. Hook it and pull.

you have to do as the image here. get a pole and something you can hook to to grab the emergency release inside. this is a broom/mop handle with an L shaped allen wrench taped to the other side to do it.
pull bottom of rear seat up, pull side bolster out, unmount one of the Torx nuts, that gives you enough space to move the seat out to the side to get the flashlight and broom handle through. the biggest pain was putting the bottom rear seat cushion in....way way way harder than my E46 m3 was based on how the buckles mount. you might be able to do this without removing the bottom seat cushion...not sure.

Lack of Comfort Access on the CS is the one thing BMW should be hit over the head for repeatedly! I can't imagine CA adding more than a few pounds at most. Have highly considered retrofitting CA but the install is pretty involved. |

^ tell me about it 🤣. I had a field day.. or two or three retrofitting CA.
In my case I just didn’t get one that had CA, figured didn’t really need it... wrong lol. Maybe an extra 1lb at most if BMW just added it to the CS standard since the control unit already exists either way as does the handles. A few wires and sensors in the handles. |
