Ticking/knocking after oil change

Hi everyone,

I recently had an oil change done on my BMW M3. After driving home, everything seemed fine, and I parked the car as usual. However, when I started the car the next night, I noticed a weird ticking or knocking sound coming from the engine area. The car drives completely fine and the sound seemed to have went away after the car warmed up.

I’ve attached a video where you can hear the sound. It’s not something I’ve experienced before, and I’m concerned it might be something serious. Has anyone here ever had a similar issue after an oil change, or does anyone know what this sound could be? I’d appreciate any advice or insight on what might be causing this and how I can fix it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

To be fair S55 is a pretty ticky motor.

Just for reference, my motor does not make that noise.
What you may want to also think about is that our oil filter housings are on top of the motor. If during the oil change they spilled some down onto the belts/pulleys(very possible, Ive done it), it could lead to some fluttering noise you're encountering. I'd wait a week or so and maybe see if it clears up but if it gets worse def investigate further.

That does not seem normal and the fact it goes away when warm would be concerning to me, but I'm no expert. Do you know what kind and weight oil they used? I know many of us, myself included run heavier weight oil (5W-40) than what it calls for. I assume you've ensured it's full?

Yes, I’ve also been running 5W-40, liquimoly leichtlauf high tech for the past two oil changes. Yes it was filled up with 6.9 quarts. I’ve read some things about it possibly being something related to the exhaust camshaft. Gonna bring it to my mechanic and see what he has to say. I appreciate the response

I’ll definitely check and see if that could be the case, I hope so. Thanks for the reply

It does sound reminiscent of the loose cam ledge bolt issue, but not sure where the oil change fits in

My car was making a similar sound and was resolved with the camshaft bearing ledge bolt replacement.

Mine was not as loud however

Hey everyone, I know it’s been a minute, but just wanted to update you all on the engine noise I posted about. Turned out it was the harmonic balancer causing it. It had split apart. Took me a while to get it sorted, but it’s all fixed now. Appreciate everyone’s suggestions!
