Forgestar F14 Increased Load Rating
I noticed that the Forgestar F14 increased their load rating from 1200 to 1520 lbs per wheel.
http://www.**********s.com/Forgestar...8x10-18x11.htm I'd previously dismissed them because on paper it looked like they sacrificed too much strength to achieve their light weight. Now I'm giving them a second look because the price is right. They will see occasional track use. Thoughts? |

Take a look at ADV.1. I just ordered a set myself.
They offer fully custom to your specifications, forged alloy wheels. ADV.1 are fast becoming leader in the premium aftermarket wheel market. When it comes to your Z4-M why would you sacrifice weight, quality and strength just to pay less? Do it once and do it right.

Oh yes. You are probably right.
But to be fair there are also many other wheel companies that produce fully forged wheels at similar prices to suit the buyer who wants a performance wheel upgrade. ADV.1 is just the one I chose after my research into the many on the market.

Extra material has to be added to the back of the spokes to increase strength, which in turn increases weight by a substantial amount.

My other option is to wait a few years and buy something like the ADV.1 forged wheels. |

I bought some Forgestars since they revised their load rating. I weighed them on my bathroom scale (18x8.5 ET35 and 18x9.5 ET27). IIRC, the fronts were just under 20 lbs and the rears were around 22 lbs. A couple pounds heavier than previously advertised, but not enough to be a dealbreaker IMO. I don't mind the slightly added weight if it means that they'll hold up better. It still seems in the ballpark of the lightweight non-forged options from Enkei and TRMotorsport (while being a little more attractive, IMO) so I figure it's probably no more or less sturdy. They are also 3-4 lbs. lighter than comparable offerings from VMR or Alufelgen.
I think Yokohama Advan and Work wheels tend to be some of the lightest at around 17-18 lbs for 18" sizes. I doubt I'll be a good enough driver anytime soon to make 3 lbs a corner matter. What's frustrating is that most manufactures of high-end forged wheels that tout the performance benefits of lightweight wheels start with 19" diameters and up. As far as I know, there are no performance benefits beyond 18" as evinced by objective testing and the the scarcity of larger sizes used in motorsport. It seems to me that the exotic forged market (e.g. HRE, ADV.1) is catering more to owners who care more about appearance rather than delivering on any legitimate performance agenda. Of course, cost no object, I'd love to get my hands on some BBS RE-Vs. |

Thanks for the response! I definitely agree about the larger wheel sizes. I see no benefit in going with a 19" wheel when an 18" wheel will clear the calipers.
Did you weigh the wheels by themselves? Or did you weigh yourself and then yourself holding the wheel to determine the weight? The reason I ask is because many bathroom scales can be pretty inaccurate down low. |

I just weighed the wheel. I also weighed the tire separately, and then the wheel/tire combination once they were mounted, and the combination was i think within 0.1 lb. When I weighed the style 224 wheels they came in around 27.5 and 30 lbs, which seems to jive with what some other people have found, so I think it's reasonable to believe that my measurement is accurate to +/- 0.5 lb.
