That was a VERY positive review
They start by wondering if the turbo means the end of the world etc... They say that they won't do a "relic cult" article but will leave that part to various internet forums... I'll try to do a few recaps of some of the main points: -Manual transmission increases the drama of the car! -They give credit to BMW for offering a manual -Apart from a slight jerkiness on take off (most likely due to the dual mass flywheel) the MT brings only joy! -The MT brings back the moment where acceleration stops and then starts again, controlled by the driver when he changes up a gear. That adds to the excitement! The MT blips the throttle during downshifts. Wonderful! -Start up sound is impressive and sounds like you had a mix of a 435i and Porsche Boxster starting up in your garage -The engine delivers loads of power: *From the low end it pulls like a 3l turbo diesel, but it just keeps on pulling above that *It pushes like a brute through the midrange *It revs with joy through the final part and to the redline -From 4500rpm and on, diodes lights up, indicating shiftpoints (was this previously known?) -From 2000rpm and on, the turbine like sound is added to by a multi-cylinder staccato beat. You partly think it's a racing 4cyl engine, then perhaps a 5cyl and then a V10. -The M4 sounds exceptionally and goes better than a 911 Carrera S -Is then the turbo engine the "healing charms"? *Well, there are some minor gripes, which is about the principle of turbocharging itself *Turbo lag can't be designed out. The turbo needs exhaust gas to react and therein lies the concept of lag *But, the BMW engineers have succeeded in keeping the lag at a flat rate. In NA operation the engine pulls strongly and the transition to boosted operation is "soft", then boost builds gradually. It's even better in Sport+ where there is only a very slight delay between throttle input and full power *Only during part throttle driving, with on/off throttle inputs, there can be a slight jerkiness from the engine as the turbos go from boosting to not boosting -Active Suspension has very good settings -EPS is really good -The car, just like recent Porsche's and Ferrari's has a too large body for fast driving on narow roads. Fans of the third gen M3 (E46) should wait for the M2 in this respect -The ESP settings doesn't limit fast driving, in fact it encourages it instead! -The enourmous mechanical grip, controllability and feedback makes for unreal lap times!!! -On a turn manouvre the M4 manages to do it at 151,7km/h, the 911 Carrera S "only" managed 147,8km/h -No, the turbo doesn't mean the end of driving pleasure! It's becoming even closer to the NA characteristics. -BMW are still working with electrically driven turbos and we might see them in the next gen M cars. There is also a interview with Friedrich Nitschke, where he answers the question about wether we will see a M super sports car for the BMW anniversary in 2016 like this: "I will answer your question like this: Every division of BMW will contribute to the anniversary"... Later in the article they write about the slalom test where the M4 achieved 151,7km/h and the Carrera S "only" managed 147,8km/h. So I guess they first talked about acceleration and then later the slalom speed. |

The 11,1l fuel consumption is the official drive cycle number. AMuS have a fuel consumption route where the M4 managed a very good 7,6l/km. The maximal consumption during the test was 14,7l/km and the test average was 11,5l/km (which is very good IMO) |

Thanks for posting and thanks Boss330 for the quick translation.
Nice to see a review of the MT. Impressive 1-100 kph time given official MT 0-60 mph of 4.1 sec.

Wow, most factual review yet, and a ton of positives. Amazing that it is faster through the slalom than the 911S, and amazing that the fuel consumption is so much better than the E92 M3.

Base interior looks amazing. Far better than I had feared since i ordered it. Now while the full leather and SO interiors are getting a lot of attention I think cloth is going to be desirable in several years. Nice.

Two quick things I just noticed:
1. The cloth/leather seats have contrasted stitching on the seats and door grab. Good. 2. If they tested a cloth/leather seat model pictured here with M/T, note that the seats are manual - not power. That's a nice chunk of weight savings we don't have here in the U.S. |

Same as here in the UK, I'm slightly disappointed about having to take electric seats as I'm the only person who will drive my car and once the seats are set they won't change position thus making electric seats totally unnecessary for me.

I went to www.bmw.de to configure the vehicle and the thing that would move me away from CCBs is they need the bigger wheels...which is additional 1850 EUR + more expensive tires on every change
while I do like better braking it's almost 10K EUR in total(>$13K), thank you but I'll buy a nice track prepped E36 for that kind of money also I didn't consider HK option before but noticing it's relatively cheap at 1050 EUR ($1400) and having in mind that engine sound on this turbo engine isn't that great I might pull the trigger on it it's interesting that BMW charges at least 800 EUR for any other color than AW which would IMO look really nice and subtle with cloth interior, also it's the color that repels heat the best in comparison with other colors... so for me AW M3 with dark cloth, only options adaptive suspension (1K EUR) and HK (1K EUR), I was thinking about tinted windows but only rear windows get tinted because of stupid laws and I don't like how that looks especially on a white car base export price in Germany 62K EUR (ffs it's 35% more than in US) which equals 75K EUR($100K USD) with all the taxes...oh well |
